Questions to Ask a Contractor About Permits
A good contract should say who pulls permits, which permits are included, and who pays for corrections or reinspections.
Ask before signing
- Will you pull the permit, or am I expected to pull it?
- Does the permit cover the full scope in the proposal?
- Are electrical, plumbing, mechanical, gas, solar, or right-of-way permits separate?
Ask about inspections
- Which inspections are required before work is covered?
- Who schedules inspections and meets the inspector?
- How are correction notices handled, and are reinspection fees included?
Ask for records
- Will I receive copies of the permit, approved plans, inspection approvals, and final signoff?
- Will subcontractors be listed correctly?
- What happens if the city asks for revised drawings or engineering?
